What is Hearts & Hands

Hearts & Hands, Inc. was founded in 1994 to assist low income and disabled homeowners with home repairs that are beyond their physical and/or financial capabilities.

We work year round to provide services such as:

  • scraping and painting
  • general carpentry
  • general repair work
  • installing handicapped aids
  • installing kitchen cabinets, counters, and appliances
  • building room additions
  • cleaning up outside premises.

Other services may be provided based on the available experiences and resources.

All of the work is done by volunteers, half of whom are young people of high school and college age.

We provide the materials for the jobs at no cost to the homeowners.

The criteria for assisting families or individuals are:

  • families or individuals must be "low income", based on federal guidelines.
  • families or individuals must own the residence to receive services.

Hearts & Hands, Inc. is a not-for-profit, section 501(c)(3) nonprofit charity organization.

We usually meet at 7:30pm on the second Thursday of each month at the OBA Bank located at 20300 Seneca Meadows Parkway, in Germantown, Maryland. We try to have at least one work day each month. The more volunteers we have, the more people we can help. We need people interested not only in the actual repair work, but those who can help with the "behind-the-scenes" kinds of things, such as our quarterly newsletter and articles for community newspapers, developing and/or making presentations to civic organizations and other groups, visiting potential work sites to see what needs to be done and what supplies are needed, telephoning volunteers about upcoming work days, obtaining any building permits and other documentation, and planning fund-raising activities. For up-to-date information on scheduled meetings, work days, volunteering, referring those who may be in need of assistance, or requesting assistance, please call Hearts & Hands at (301) 947-5770.
